THE SUMMARY OF EACH CHAPTER

1. Chapter 1

It was the end of a summer afternoon, Anniemarie and Mark were sitting under this tree, their tree while eating popsicles. Anniemarie was waiting for Mark to kiss and looked her as the way as she looked him. But they ended up by teasing to each other. Anniemarie knew Mark had a crush on Celia (Anniemarie’s older sister) since they were little kids and she knew Celia was prettier than her. But how could Jack compared her to Celia? However, she could not stay mad at Mark like it was something impossible to do so and Mark’s mother liked Annie even Annie hoped that she would get adopted by her. But it was different now, she wanted to be Mr and Mrs.Findley cherished daughter in law.

2. Chapter 2

When she got home, she went straight to her bedroom and called Elaine. Elaine Kim moved to her neighbourhood last December. Everyone wanted to be her best friend because she was new and from New York City but she chose her. Annie told her that she was in love with Mark but Elaine told her that she already knew about it so, it was not a surprise for her.
So, Annie wanted some advice from her but Elaine told her that she should talk to her mother because Elaine idolized her mother. But Annie knew her mother better than Elaine and sometimes she wished to look at her mother as the same way as Elaine looked her mother. But it’s getting harder and harder.

3. Chapter 3

Elaine once asked Annie why her mama called her Shug. There was a book with the title of “The color Purple” that was probably her and her’s mom favourite book. The main character’s name is Celie (like Celia) and she had a real beat-down  kind of life. She though she was nothing. Then Celia met Shug Avery. Shug Avery did not take crap from nothing and nobody. She was a singer and a temptress. When Shug blew through town, she shaked the whole town up. Everyone was enchanted by her. That’s why Annie’s mama called her Shug and it’s short for sugar. Plenty of mamas call their babies shug but for Annie’s mama, Annie knew it’s more than a sweet way of talking. Annie’s mom wanted her to squeeze like Shug Avery and to be beautiful the way she and shug were.

4. Chapter 4

Celia came home early the next morning and went straight to bedroom then, she slept till noon. When she finally emerged, Annie was sitting at the kitchen table, reading. Celia cooked them cheddar omelettes and bacon, as they ate, she watched Annie and thought about how much she looked like Daddy. She was so thinking how pretty she was that she almost forgot to tell her big news. But the lie came out before she even had time to think it through, “Kyle Montgomery”, she had a crush on him. Then, she told Celia that the boy she had crush on did not like her cause he liked someone else. So, she wanted some advice from Celia. Celia asked her to flirt with his friends and the time was perfect when Mark called her to come to his house for hanging out with his friends, Jack and Kyle and Tommy.

5. Chapter 5

She walked right through the front door because she’s practically a part of the family. Mrs.Findley was icing a red velvet cake in the kitchen and greeted her with her special smile, the one where her nose wrinkled. Talking to Mrs.Findley was as easy as talking to Elaine or Celia, but in a different way. She listened and nodded and she made you felt safe. That’s she relieved when Mrs.Findley suggested that she should bring the cake down to the rec room and it gave her some sort of purpose, a reason to be there. However, the boys did not even look up when she came into the room then when she said she got cake and finally they looked at her. She was wearing an old yellow sundress of Celia’s and she had tied her hair back with green ribbon but all they saw was the cake.

6. Chapter 6

She lived in the kind of town where people were always saying things like “ I can’t wait to get out of here”. Everybody dreamed big where I was from, but nobody’s dreams ever came true. That’s what had happened to Annie’s mom. Annie’s mom and dad were both born and raised in Clementon. They both went to Clementon High, they dated, then they went their separate ways to college. Mom went to women’s college up North and daddy to the state school but Mama had to come home when Grandpa Cavane got sick so, she went to the state school too. They fell right back in love and got married after graduation. And Annie always got fantasies of what if mama and daddy had never, she would be prettier as she felt it was her dad’s fault she was ten feet tall with a bird chest.

Synopsis:

Twelve-year-old Annemarie has just discovered that she likes Mark --- not the kind of like that has kept them friends since they were five, but a different kind of like that involves holding hands and first kisses. Unfortunately, he only sees her as just one of his pals. And even that status seems to be slipping.
At the end of the annual summer pool party, for the first time Mark doesn't defend her against the annoying and insulting Jack. Not that Annemarie can't defend herself (she does, challenging Jack to a diving contest that puts him in his place); it's just that Mark has always been on her side, until now. And then, on the first day of junior high, Mark fails to show up at her door so they can walk together to the bus stop like they've done every school morning since the beginning of time. Friendship boundaries seem to be shifting, and Annemarie is not happy.
Home life is shifting as well. Her parents and older sister Celia continue to call her Shug, short for Sugar and also a character in her mom's favorite book. But her dad, often away on business, is coming home less often. Her mom, never one for cooking and PTA meetings, is drinking more and more and available less and less. Fifteen-year-old Celia used to let Annemarie tag along occasionally, but even Celia doesn't seem to have much time for her anymore. Then there's the fighting. When her parents are together, the arguments become unbearable. She fears divorce may be looming in the future. With all the scary and unwanted changes exploding in her life, Annemarie just wishes things would go back to the way they were.

Review:

Author Jenny Han has written an incredible first novel. The plot is heartwrenchingly familiar as almost everyone has gone or is going through the same mixed up stuff as the characters. Han nails the emotional storms that rage through Annemarie as life around her grows and changes while she clings to the old times. Han's characters are diverse and very believable, especially Annemarie, who's strong and tough on the outside yet vulnerable and afraid on the inside. Readers will relate to every misadventure Annemarie survives.

Truthfully, I wasn't expecting to feel this way about a novel geared towards middle schoolers. I read this because it was the only Jenny Han novel I haven't read and, boy, was I missing out. This was told from a 12 year olds perspective but I was still moved.

Shug is about a girl moving from elementary to middle school and all of the emotions and tribulations that come with that. I can distinctly remember being that age. Everything felt so important and everything is the end of the world. Shug is a lot like that. Shug also has family issues and she ends up having to deal with adult things at a young age.

Han is still funny and charming and I love her even more now.

Sometimes you'll read a book that will choke you up. Rarely will I read a book that makes me flat out bawl...in a good way. Shug by Jenny Han (Alladin Mix, 2007), is one such book, and it has instantly become one of my favorite tween YA novels. Han grabs you immediately with Shug's authentic voice and sharp point of view.

The novel is all about the way things change once you enter middle school, whether you are ready or not. It starts in summer just before school starts, and already things are different. For one thing, Shug is suddenly seeing her best friend in a different and romantic light, but he doesn't notice at all. And then there is the whole friend thing. What do you do when your other best friend (who is a girl) suddenly befriends some popular girls, and gets a boyfriend? Where do you fit in then? And how do you be a good person when you are sitting at the lunch table with this popular crowd, barely hanging onto the right to sit there, and another girl, who used to be your friend but also makes the popular's eyes roll, walks by, and obviously has no one to sit with? Do you commit social suicide and invite her, or do you avert your eyes and shut up?

Oh how well I remember those painful moments. Shug experiences the guilt and the sadness of being on both sides of the story. She finds herself being part of the crowd that is nasty, as well as being shunned by the nasty crowd. We've all experienced both sides, and at some point we all have to decide just who are we? What do we stand for? What is really important? And can we ever forgive ourselves or others for being such horrible jerks?

If you are going into middle school, read this book. If you've ever been through middle school, read this book. And love this book. It is unforgettable.
