This book  featured of a girl, Delilah and a boy, Oliver who is one of the characters that portrayed in the fairytale book which Delilah loved to read. That’s why Jodi Picoult and her daughter made a special chapter each for Oliver and Delilah because this story was about two different worlds. After Oliver, then Delilah and after Delilah, it was Oliver again. It would be like that until the end of the story.
So, here we go!!!
THE SUMMARY OF EACH CHAPTER

1. The beginning

This chapter focussed on how was the story in the fairytale book that Delilah always reads from time to time. It told how Oliver’s father, King Maurice died after having a battle with a monster created by Rapscullio, a man who was in love with the the Queen Maureen. Because of the battle, Oliver did not get “courage” from the third fairy cause the fairy gave him life instead of courage to save him as he did not cry when he was born. So, he just got wisdom from the first fairy, loyalty from the second fairy and life from the third fairy.

2. Oliver

Oliver was bored to play his role as prince over and over whenever the book was opened. This chapter told us how Oliver, Frump (have a role as Oliver’s dog), and Queen Maureen were just free to go about their business when the book was closed. That’s made him to actively dream about life in the Otherworld. But when Oliver was busy playing chess, Delilah opened the book in a sudden and that made Oliver to be panic. And it’s freaking out when the chessboard was still there, a proof that there was a life in this book were still carved on the beach.

3. Delilah

Delilah had a best friend named, Jules and Jules understood her fixation on books as she felt the same way about B-movies horror films. But Delilah had never been told Jules about her addiction towards the fairytale book as she was just embarrassed with her choice of reading material. She got obsessed with this book because the very first thing that she learned about Oliver was it wasn’t easy growing up without dad. Maybe Delilah’s father did not die in battle but he had left her mother when she was ten years old and found himself a new, improved family. Delilah got shocked when she saw a chessboard on the sand but he got furious when she read the book again and there was still no chessboard on the sand. Another strange situation happened when she saw the dagger clenched between his hand is now in his right hand.

4. Page 11 (Oliver)

Oliver realized that Delilah had noticed the chessboard on the sand so, he took a chance on the page when he was alone by scratching the words “HELP ME”.He was quite happy when she saw that.

5. Page 11 (Delilah)

Delilah went crazy when she knew herself was talking with a book. But she felt grateful when Oliver was desperate for her to return. She was also impatient to tell Jules the truth, hope she could tell someone what had really been happened. But when she saw that page, Oliver did not speak anything to them and he was just being quiet as the role as he supposed to do.

6. Page 27 (Oliver)

Oliver told Queen Maureen that he had fallen in love with someone outside the book. He asked her opinion about that love. And at same time, Frump gathered all the characters in the book to have a meeting. He told them that currently, the reader reads on the page 43 so, he decided to make something different to make them being noticed by the reader. Oliver also discovered that Rapscullio could create anything he wanted just by painting it – even when the story wasn’t being read.

7. Page 27 (Delilah)

Delilah accidentally drowned the most popular girl in her school during her swim practice. She started crying when she saw Oliver and told him that every single student in her school would hate her but Oliver said to her that he would not hate him. But Oliver did not go to Delilah’s school so, Oliver told Delilah that he had been figured out the way out of the book.

8. Page 31 (Oliver)

Delilah showed Oliver a thorough tour of her room so, Oliver can remember every corner of her room. After, he quickly met up Rapscullio and asked her to help to paint something as a present to his friend. He gave instruction to Rapscullio and making corrections when necessary. Finally, he saw a detailed replica of Delilah’s room.It was perfect but he did not know how to paint himself into paint cause he was afraid Rapscullio would tell the other characters especially, Frump that he wanted to leave the story.

9. Page 31 (Delilah)

Delilah complained Oliver for taking so long and she has been waiting for an hour and a half and the result is nothing. On the other hand, Delilah’s mother was worried of her as she heared her talking to herself for a whole night. That’s made her angry. Finally, Delilah opened page 43 and told Oliver that he started to show up flat as pancake. Oliver was quite sad and told Delilah to close the book cause he wanted to be alone.

10. Page 32 (Oliver)

Oliver came to Rapscullio for the third time and asked him to show his collection of books. Oliver read the cover of Between The Lines and saw a picture of himself on the very first page as he was string into a mirror. Then, he got an idea why not he edit himself out of this one as he may not be able to pain himself into another world.

11. Page 32 (Delilah)

She paired up with Allie as her lab partner during her Biology class.Allie’s boyfriend, Ryan dragged his stool toward our lab table, even though he was supposed to be working with someone else. Then, suddenly Ryan grabbed the frog and shoved it so close to my face then, with all her might she pushed away from him and it caused enough commotion that the entire class stopped to watch. She was really feeling down because of that bad incident and she knew the only one that would make her to feel better was Oliver. Her mother also became so worried of her and told her that they were going to Dr.Ducharne.

12.Page 37 (Oliver)

Oliver eagerly waiting for Delilah to be back from her school and told her the big discovery that he had been found. At the same moment, Frump came asking help from him. He asked him to follow him to the forest to meet with Seraphima because Seraphima did not want to meet him if only just Frump. On this chapter, Delilah urgently asked Oliver to talk to her but it just made him to be confused because Delilah always asks him to be quiet whenever her mother is around her.

13. Page 37 (Delilah)

Delilah got to see Dr. Ducharne and she tried to him that she could talk to the book. Then she showed the book and the doctor opened at the page where Oliver with Pyro, a dragon then he put the book on the table. The minute the doctor step out, the book burst into flames fortunately, Delilah immediately thrust it into the enormous fish tank.

14. Page 40 (Oliver)

Oliver met with Orville, the wizard and he got to look at his fortune. He saw him sitting in a room that reminded him of Delilah’s room except different. Then, he saw a girl walked in and wrapped her arms around me and the girl wasn’t Delilah.

15.Page 40 (Delilah)

Oliver asked Rapscullio to paint Delilah and that caused Delilah to come to Oliver’s world. But Delilah was angry as Oliver did not ask her permission before asking Rapscullio to do so. Delilah did not want to leave her life and she was afraid she would  stuck in the book forever.

16.Page 44 (Oliver)

Delilah met again with Oliver. Oliver apologized for not asking her permission first. So, he brought Delilah to meet Orville to know did Delilah can get out of that book. Delilah knew the girl who was with Oliver when they saw Oliver’s fortune but beforw yelling out the girl’s name, Frump raced inside and yelled at Oliver that he made Seraphima hurt. Frump knew that Oliver did not have cousin as he told to Seraphima that Delilah was his cousin. Frump also changed into a human after a commotion happening in Orvilles’s cottage and slowly Delilah vanished into million pieces, vanishing into nothing but dust.

17. Page 44 (Delilah)

Oliver was relieved as he knew that Delilah was alive. Delilah told Oliver that she knew that girl cause that girl was the author of Between The Lines, Jessamyn. Then, Delilah came to Jessamyn’s house and asked her to change the ending of the story so, Oliver could come out of the book  but Jessamyn refused as the story did not belong to her anymore. Delilah also met with Jessamyn’s son ,Edgar who looked exactly as the same as Oliver and she found out that Edgar could also notice Oliver.

Synopsis:

Delilah, a loner hates school as much as she loves books – one book in particular. In fact if anyone knew how many times she has read and reread the sweet little fairy tale she found in the library, especially her cooler than cool classmates, she’d be sent to social Siberia……forever. To Delilah , though this fairy tale is more than just words on the page. Sure, there’s a handsome (well, okay, incredibly handsome) prince, and a castle, and an evil villain, but it feels as if there’s something deeper going on. And one day, Delilah finds out there is. Turns out, this prince Charming is not just a one-dimensional character in a book. He’s real and, a certain fifteen – year – old loner has caught his eye. But they’re from two different worlds, and how can it ever possibly work?

Review:

This is Jodi’s first-ever tween/YA novel, co-written with her daughter Samantha. Between the lines was Sammy’s idea, and frankly, she’s got a better imagination than Jodi ever did at her age.So, this novel was a kind of other successful novels by Jodi Picoult.

This book actually doesn’t feel like young adult, but it’s a charming and refreshing to read. I also think this is a perfect book for younger readers maybe middle school aged to early high school because the main character, Delilah, is only 15, a freshman in high school. But I am 21 and I am still enjoyed reading this book and I read it until the end. I also hope the sweet little romance will happen to me.hehehe..

Maybe the fans of Jodi Picoult’s adult novels will be disappointed with this novel but the first thing you need to do to pick up  this book: forget about her solo work and remember this a joint effort.Trust me when I say it is something completely different from any of her previous works. And boy, is it wonderful.

Let me just say how completely amazing I found this premise. As someone who has always loved reading, I have sometimes wondered what it would be like if the characters in books were real, if they lived in our world. However, I love the idea that the characters in the book have their own lives when the book is closed and that they’re completely different people from those they played in the book. So, it’s like an acting but the different is they’re acting in a book not in a television.

Finally, I just hope parents would buy this book for their children because imagination is a wonderful thing and it’s not  something which is just for children. We need more books like this..
